A nation calls

The heartache continues for Martha, as duty calls her husband away to the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia.

On a rainy day in June 1775, Washington and his aides
ride from Philadelphia to Boston, where he will assume command of the army of militias squared off against Gen. Gage's British army.

Washington can't tell friend
from foe as he progresses toward Boston.

Harkening back to his days
with the retreating army of Edward Braddock,
Washington leads his inexperienced army on a strategic withdrawal
from
the British on
Long
Island,
New York.

Washington rides into the middle of chaos at the battle of Monmouth; instead of attacking as ordered, Gen. Charles Lee has retreated.

In a rare instance during the Revolution, Washington unleashes his temper on
Lee in the midst of battle.
