Pursuit of Honor
The Rise of George Washington
First in Peace
.....................................................

Washington's first love is
Sally Cary Fairfax, the
wife of his closest friend, George William Fairfax.

Honor forbids Washington from pursuing Sally, although a controversial letter survives in which he professes his love.

Who is this man? Martha's children wonder as he shows them his gorget. Jacky is 4; Patsy is 2. In 1759, George Washington becomes master of an instant family.

George reads to his step-daughter, Patsy Custis.

An idyllic life at his beloved Mount Vernon ... this is
on the line in the early
1770s, as conflict with
Great Britain deepens.

Washington writes to Martha that he has been chosen to
lead the Continental Army. It
is June; he expects to return home "in the fall." He will
not see his beloved Mount Vernon for more than six years.
